Many Roads to Short Rows: 5 Types of Short Rows

September 28, 2026 - October 19, 2026

Short rows turn up everywhere in knitting.  From toy shaping to adding darts in a sweater, having good short row skills help your project look polished and professional.  But how well do you really know them?

Many Roads to Short Rows will cover five different methods of knitting short rows, plus all of the tips and tricks to do them well.  We’ll practice in class on a swatch, but for homework you will use all five techniques to knit a pumpkin perfect for fall.

Materials: For class: 50g of worsted-weight yarn with appropriate needles, locking stitch markers, and a tapestry needle.  For homework: 50g of DK or worsted-weight yarn for a pumpkin, 10g of yarn in the same weight for the stem, vine, and leaf, needles appropriate for the yarn, and locking stitch markers

What We’ll Cover: Five different short row methods (wrap and turn, German, Japanese, shadow, and yarn over), choosing between the methods, substituting one for the other, and reading charts with short rows
